We took an autumnal trip down to Pembrokeshire to visit the lovely Abi, stepping into her world to discover the making of her beautiful cranky box illustration for this year’s Yuletide at Tatton Park. 🍂
Nestled amongst stone circles and ancient landscapes, Abi welcomed us into her hand-built wooden home and studio, tucked away in an eco-village. Peppermint tea gathered from the garden, the log burner crackling away, and a little glimpse into the thoughtful, magical world behind her work.
We invited Abi to take a deep dive into one of the many folkloric tales woven throughout this year’s Yuletide trail. She chose hare gazing: the curious and captivating behaviour of a hare sitting perfectly still, gazing up at the moon. Folklore has long told stories of a hare dwelling within the moon, and on a clear night, when the moon is full, it is said you might catch a glimpse of its shadowy shape reflected in the lunar surface. A little magic for the dreamers amongst us.
Inspired by this tale, and the turning of the seasons into the dark half of the year, Abi found her own interpretation in a story from the National Folklore Collection, collected by Seamus Bán Belderrig. Her illustration invites us to look upwards, and perhaps see something extraordinary hiding in plain sight.
We can’t wait for you to discover the area that inspired her along the trail. ✨
